Troy Library Director Russ Honored by Wayne State University

Wayne State University School of Library and Information Science graduate Cathy Russ received the annual award for Most Distinguished Alumna.

The following information was provided in a press release. Troy Public Library Director Cathy Russ was honored by the Wayne State University School of Library and Information Science at its annual recognition ceremony April 16. Russ, an adjunct professor of library administration and management in the Wayne State graduate program, received a master of library and information science from the school. The school's distinguished alumna award is given annually to a graduate who has made outstanding contributions to the library and information science field, a person who has achieved distinction in the profession based on job performance, service, publications or other relevant professional activity. See how the Teen Advisory Board has grown so quickly in one year under the leadership of students and staff.

The Troy Public Library, which is known in the community for programs supporting families with young children and adults alike, is working hard to bring adolescents into the fold thanks in large part to a dedicated group of teenaged volunteers. Arushi Mahajan, the President of the TPL Teen Advisory Board (TAB), has been a denizen of the library for years, she said — adding with a laugh that she's racked up her share of late fines in that time period — but only for about the past year influencing how the library operates. Patrons Celebrate 'Tech Farm' Opening at Troy Public Library

The tech farm features the latest devices to help promote multimedia literacy in area kids.

Shop at Barnes & Noble to Support Troy Public Library This Season

Find out how you can get some of your holiday shopping done while contributing to the library.

The following information was provided by the City of Troy. Beginning Cyber Monday, Nov. 26, and ending on Sunday, Dec. 2, if you shop at any Barnes & Noble store nationwide and present the cashier with a special voucher (also attached to this story), a percentage of the sale will be donated by Barnes & Noble to the Troy Public Library. If you choose to shop online instead, you can still participate in the fundraiser by entering the bookfair ID 10798981 at checkout. Etsy is “the world’s handmade marketplace,” according to the website Etsy.com.  From hand-painted items to jewelry, crafts, furniture and more, Etsy has unique items made by artists of every kind. As part of the Fun Finance Series, the Troy Public Library presents “All About Etsy,” on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Library’s meeting room. As part of National Friends of the Library Week from Oct. 21-27, the Friends of the Troy Public Library are inviting residents to become a Friends member and volunteer.

On Tuesday, Oct 2, the Friends of the Troy Public Library held their annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Troy Public Library. More than 40 volunteers attended to enjoy a pasta dinner, win prizes and share the evening with other Friends library volunteers. Janeen Miller was chosen as the Friends Volunteer of the Year to represent the organization at the Leadership Troy Banquet on Oct. 17. Banned Books Week 2012: What You Need to Know

Censorship is alive and well, as highlighted by Banned Books Week (Sept. 30-Oct. 6) — and you might be surprised by who the most vocal challengers of books are.

The importance of the First Amendment and the concept of "intellectual freedom" might not always be readily apparent to most kids, but Banned Books Week is a great opportunity to make those lessons come alive for children—and adults. Banned Books Week is held annually during the last week of Sept. (Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2012). The week is an occasion for libraries and bookstores across the U.S. to help folks realize just how real and ongoing a problem censorship is. Last year, the Troy Public Library celebrated Banned Books Week, inviting patrons on their website to "pick a banned book, available on the display cube in the Youth Services area of the Troy Library, and celebrate the freedom to read."
