Your Guide to the Troy Mayor May 7 Special Election

Voters will decide between six candidates to fill one partial term.

Troy residents will decide between six candidates running for one partial term as Mayor in the May 7 special election. Incumbent Mayor Dane Slater, who was appointed on Nov. 26 following the Nov. 7 ouster of Mayor Janice Daniels, is among the candidates vying to serve the term, expiring Nov. 9, 2015. The five other candidates include former State Representative Marty Knollenberg, David Elsas, Jon Desjardins, Faris Alami, and Scott T. Welborn. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In order to vote, you must: A newly-passed law places new language on the ballot application that states that the voter is a U.S. citizen and is qualified to vote, and the voter certifies this by signing the application.  The state of Michigan's Web site has a …

McGinnis to be Sworn In as Acting Mayor of Troy

Until the Oakland County Board of Canvassers certifies Tuesday's results, Janice Daniels is still the mayor of Troy.

Troy Mayor Janice Daniels, who was recalled Tuesday by a 52 percent majority of Troy voters, is still technically the mayor of Troy until the Oakland County Board of Canvassers certifies Tuesday's election results. “We’re hoping it happens very quickly, but we can’t say for sure," Troy City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm said Wednesday. RECALLED: Troy Mayor Janice Daniels Voted Out of Office

A majority of Troy residents voted to remove embattled Troy Mayor Janice Daniels from office Tuesday.

The people of Troy voted 52 percent to 48 percent to recall Mayor Janice Daniels on Tuesday. The votes were 20,763 to 18,993, according to unofficial results from the Oakland County Clerk, with all precincts reporting. It all started with a Facebook status update containing a gay slur that then-private citizen Daniels posted on her wall in June of 2011. Then, on Dec. 2, 2011, just weeks after she was sworn in as mayor of Troy, the Facebook post was found, shared, and shared some more, quickly garnering national media attention. Residents were angry. Patrick, The vote of the citizens of Troy was to vote out of office an insensitive mayor. If you can't represent all of the citizens of our City you don't deserve to be our leader. Former Mayor Daniels lacked a necessary the quality of leadership to know her people and represent them all regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion or individual differences. Athens Students Vote to Recall Troy Mayor in Mock Election

Students also voted to re-elect President Barack Obama.

Even though many may not yet be of voting age, Troy Athens High School students still got a chance to cast their ballot Tuesday. In a mock election held during school hours on Tuesday, Athens students voted to keep the president – and kick out Troy Mayor Janice Daniels. According to Troy School District spokesperson Kerry Birmingham, President Barack Obama beat out Republican candidate Mitt Romney in the mock election by 200 votes. "The mayor was recalled by a two thirds majority," Birmingham added. "Roughly around 1400-1450 students voted today in the Athens Mock Election, according to a teacher coordinating it," tweeted the Scarlet Letter (@AthensSL), Athens' student paper.
