Drunken Driver Refuses to Part with Cheeseburger and More

The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media releases.

Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs

Dequindre and E. Big Beaver, June 15, 2:48 a.m.: Troy Officers observed two vehicles exit an area fast food establishment when one began driving recklessly, swerving at the other. The swerving vehicle was stopped and the driver apologized for swerving at the other vehicle, explaining that his cousin was in the other car. He smelled of intoxicants and had bloodshot/glassy eyes. The 22 year-old Troy resident was uncooperative, refusing to put down his cheeseburger and exit the vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle finally took the driver’s cheeseburger away from him. The driver, continuing to be uncooperative, failed sobriety tests and was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Blood test results are pending. 

W. Big Beaver and Crooks, June 14, 10:36 p.m.: Troy Officers were dispatched to an injury accident near Big Beaver and Crooks. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle that was not at-fault in the accident. He stated that he was eastbound on Big Beaver when a vehicle that was in a turnaround for traffic going from westbound to eastbound Big Beaver suddenly turned out in front of his vehicle. He was unable to avoid striking the SUV. There is a traffic light at the turnaround. The vehicle in the turnaround had disregarded the flashing red light. Officers spoke with the at-fault driver who appeared to be extremely intoxicated. She had very poor balance, slurred speech and was lethargic. She admitted to drinking less than a pint. The 20 year-old Rochester Hills resident was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. A blood test was administered and operating while intoxicated charges are pending. She has one prior drinking and driving conviction. 

Livernois and Town Center, June 14, 11:27 p.m.: Troy Officers responded to a report of an injury accident at Livernois and Town Center. A witness reported that a vehicle had run off the roadway, for no apparent reason, striking the guardrail. Officers arrived on the scene and found that the driver was disoriented and confused. The 32 year-old Sterling Heights resident stated that he took pain medication for back problems. He was transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. At the hospital, the driver told officers that he had taken 2 prescription pain pills earlier in the evening. He remembered leaving the area of Fifteen Mile and VanDyke, but did not remember anything between that point and being put into the ambulance. A blood test was administered and an operating under the influence of drugs charge is pending.

I-75 and Crooks, June 15, 11:37 p.m.: A Troy Officer stopped a vehicle that he observed traveling at 85 miles per hour and weaving within its lane. The vehicle smelled strongly of marijuana and the officer asked the driver if he had been smoking marijuana. The driver explained that he had smoked all of his marijuana while at a local concert venue that evening. Marijuana and narcotic paraphernalia associated with marijuana use were found in the vehicle. The 20 year-old Holly resident failed sobriety tests and was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of narcotic paraphernalia. A blood test was administered and results are pending.  

I-75 and Crooks, June 15, 11:55 p.m.: A concerned citizen reported that they were following a vehicle that was drifting between lanes and Troy Officers were dispatched to the area. Officers located the vehicle and confirmed that it was not maintaining its lane and repeatedly crossed over lane markers. When the vehicle was stopped, officers found that they driver smelled of intoxicants and had slurred speech. When the 24 year-old Royal Oak man was unable to correctly recite the alphabet correctly he became visibly frustrated with himself. A bottle of prescription pain killers, not prescribed to the driver, were found in his pants pocket. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. Breath test results were .18 percent.

I-75 and Fourteen Mile, June 16, 12:55 a.m.: An officer was dispatched to I-75 when a citizen reported they were following a vehicle that was weaving all over the roadway. The officer located the suspect vehicle and confirmed that it was swerving from lane to lane and at times straddling two lanes. The vehicle was stopped and the officer found that the driver had glassy eyes, slurred speech, smelled of intoxicants and was very confused. When asked to exit the vehicle, the driver was extremely unbalanced, almost failing to the ground, and leaned against his vehicle for support. After failing the first sobriety test, the driver refused to attempt any others. Marijuana was located in his vehicle, and the 34 year-old Clinton Township man was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. A blood test was administered; results are pending. The driver has two previous convictions for drinking and driving. 

I-75 and Crooks, June 16, 2:48 a.m.: A Troy Officer was dispatched to the area when a citizen reported a suspected drunk driver northbound on I75. The officer located the vehicle and confirmed that it was swerving and crossing the right lane marker. The officer stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver. The 19 year-old Oakland Township man smelled of intoxicants, had bloodshot/glassy eyes and could not correctly recite the alphabet. He failed sobriety tests and was arrested foroperating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .11 percent.

100 block of Forthton, June 16, 11:32 p.m.: A resident called Troy Police after a vehicle backed out of a neighbor’s driveway, struck a parked car, and then left the scene. Shortly thereafter, officers located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle and noted that the SUV had crash damage and paint transfer from the vehicle that had been struck. The driver admitted to striking the parked vehicle and stated that she had just taken her friend out to get cigarettes. The 61 year-old Troy woman had very poor balance, extremely bloodshot/glassy eyes and admitted to drinking two bottles of wine. After failing sobriety tests, she was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .18 percent. 

Dequindre and E. Fourteen Mile, June 17, 3:57 a.m.: Troy Officers stopped a suspicious vehicle which they had observed pull into the parking lot of two closed and dark businesses. When officers made contact with the driver they noted that she smelled of intoxicants and had slurred speech. Following an investigation the 20 year-old Sterling Heights resident was arrested for operating while intoxicated and driving while license suspended. Breath test results were .08 percent. The 20 year-old has two previous arrests for drinking and driving. 

Home invasions

1000 block of Colebrook, June 7-14: Copper plumbing was stolen from a vacant home. Entry was made through a rear door. 

Larcenies from autos

6000 block of Atkins, June 14-15, 7:30 p.m. to 6:15 a.m.: Resident reports that gasoline was siphoned from his vehicle during the night. The vehicle had been parked in his driveway. 

1000 block of Amberwood, June 15-16, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.: All four hubcaps were stolen from the complainant’s Cadillac Escalade while the vehicle was parked in his driveway.

Malicious destruction of property

1000 block of Burns, June 15, 2 a.m.: Complainant reports hearing a loud noise around 2:00 am. He discovered that someone had run over his front lawn damaging a garden retaining wall.  

Minors and alcohol

Livernois and W. Maple, June 17, 1:25 a.m.: A Troy Officer stopped a vehicle occupied by four individuals. The officer issued one of the passengers, an 18 year-old Troy male, a citation for possession of marijuana and possession of narcotic paraphernalia. Another vehicle passenger, whom the other three vehicle occupants had met at a local hotel, had an outstanding felony warrant for parole violation. The 33 year-old Clare man was arrested on the Michigan Department of Corrections warrant for parole violation/absconder home invasion I. 

Retail fraud

Saks Fifth Avenue, 2901 W Big Beaver, June 14, 3:05 p.m.: Two 17 year-old males, both Detroit residents, were arrested by Troy Officers for retail fraud.  The teens shoplifted two Burberry shirts and a pair of True Religion jeans. The total retail value of the stolen merchandise was $529.

Sephora, 2800 W Big Beaver, June 15, 8:16 p.m.: Troy Officers issued a citation for retail fraud to a 33 year-old Warren woman. Loss Prevention reports that she shoplifted nine cosmetic items which have a retail value of $291. She concealed the merchandise in her purse. 

Kohl’s, 500 John R, June 16, 7:37 p.m.: Two 15 year-old males, one from Warren, the other a Madison Heights resident, were detained for retail fraud. Loss Prevention observed the teens enter fitting rooms after selecting several articles of clothing. When they exited the fitting rooms, neither was carrying any merchandise and no items had been left in the fitting rooms. Loss Prevention reports that the teen’s legs appeared to be bulkier. They were apprehended when they exited the store and ten pieces of merchandise were recovered. The 15 year-olds were turned over to their parents and will be petitioned to Probate Court.  

Miscellaneous

1000 block of Irene, June 15, 4:36 p.m.: After responding to a neighbor complaint, a Troy Officer issued a citation for loud music to a 43 year-old Troy man. He refused to turn down his music, which could be heard several trailers away, stating that he wanted to listen to it loudly because it was good music. Alcohol appeared to be a factor. 

E. Long Lake and Rochester, June 16, 1:31 a.m.: Officers were dispatched to a parking lot to meet with a cab driver. The driver stated that he had picked up a subject at a bar in Detroit and agreed to drive him to Troy. The subject appeared to be intoxicated and kept falling asleep in the back of the cab. When they got to Long Lake and Rochester, the subject got out of the cab and ran westbound – failing to pay the $74.40 fare. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 35 years-old with a medium build and short brown hair. He was wearing a white dress shirt and blue slacks.
