Troy Police Reports to Retail Frauds, Auto Thefts

The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media releases.

Auto/Vehicle Thefts 

900 block of John R Road, Aug. 4-7, 5 p.m. to 9 a.m.: Resident reported her vehicle was parked in the lot when an unknown suspect broke into the vehicle in an attempted to steal it by breaking the steering column. Resident stated nothing was taken from the vehicle. 

2000 block of Lovington, Aug. 9-10, 8 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Resident advised he parked his 2005 Harley Davidson DC145 motorcycle in the lot. When he returned it was missing. 

Breaking and entries

Troy Athens, 4333 John R Road, Aug. 9-10, 9:30 p.m. to 1:34 p.m.: Complainant reported the concession stand at Troy Athens High school was broken into. Officers discovered the roll-up windows off track and the cupboards rummaged through. Two boxes of chips and one box of cookies valued at $50 were missing.

Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs

Rochester and East Big Beaver Road, Aug. 11, 10:30 p.m.: Troy Officers stopped a vehicle after observing the vehicle turn right in a no turn sign. The driver, a 45-year-old from Farmington Hills, had glossy eyes and slurred speech. The driver denied drinking or taking drugs. The officer observed a pill box on the driver’s key ring which contained prescription narcotics. The driver was unable to pass field sobrieties and was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and possession of prescription drugs without a prescription. A blood test was conducted with results pending. 

Credit, check, identity theft, other fraud

2000 block of Briarwood, Aug. 8, 9 a.m.: Resident advised she was refinancing when she discovered discrepancies on her credit report. Someone had opened an account with Detroit Edison in Detroit and went delinquent on the account.

Nordstrom, 2850 West Big Beaver Road, July 25, 12 noon: Complainant, a resident of Nevada advised his credit card numbers had been stolen and used for several purchases at Nordstrom and Target in Troy. Total amount of purchases $3,587.16, Complainant advised no one had permission to use his card. 

Drugs/narcotics

Raintree Park, 3775 John R Road, Aug. 9, 12:07 a.m.: Troy Officers patrolling the park after hours, observed a vehicle in the lot occupied by teenagers. Officer approached the vehicle and detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers searched the vehicle with the driver’s consent and did not locate any marijuana. The occupants, a 19 and 20-year-old from Clawson were issued citation for violation of park hours. 

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 760 Wattles Road, Aug. 9, 7:53 a.m.: Troy Officers were patrolling the closed church parking lot when they observed a suspect near the church entrance. The suspect stated he was waiting for a ride. Officers detected an odor of marijuana coming from the subject and located a package of Zigzag rolling papers used for smoking marijuana on the suspect. The suspect was issued a citation for possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

Larcenies

2000 block of Coolidge Highway, Aug. 3-4, 4 p.m. to 4:05 p.m.: Resident reported his Mongoose bicycle was stolen from the storage locker in the basement of the apartment building.

Macy’s, 500 West Fourteen Mile Road, Aug. 8, 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Complainant stated she went in the store to shop, when she left the store she noticed her purse felt lighter and discovered her wallet had been stolen. 

2000 block of Dorchester, Aug. 1-8, 12 midnight to 10 p.m.: Resident advised her storage locker in the basement of the apartment building had been broken into and her bike was stolen. The Trek bike was valued at $500.

Larcenies from autos

800 block of Minnesota, Aug. 6-7, 8 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.: Resident reported his vehicle was broken into overnight in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Resident stated the glove box had been opened and his Social Security card, immigration cards and $1,000 cash were stolen. 

2000 block of Dashwood, 8/7/13, 2:30 am – 8:30 am: Resident reported her vehicle was parked in the driveway overnight. In the morning the resident discovered her vehicle had been entered and her wallet was stolen containing cash, credit cards and driver’s license. 

2000 block Lovington, Aug. 6-7, 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Resident reported her vehicle was parked in the driveway overnight. In the morning resident discovered the vehicle had been entered and a pair of headphones valued at $40 was missing. Resident stated the vehicle may have been left unlocked.

2000 block of Lovington, Aug. 6-7, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.: Complainant reported his 2008 Pontiac was parked in the driveway overnight. When the complainant returned to his vehicle, he discovered it had been entered and was missing $100 in cash as well as credit cards and driver’s license. The complainant believes the vehicle may have been unlocked. 

2000 block of Crooks Road, Aug. 9, 2:30 p.m.: Complainant reported she stopped for gas and then went into the gas station. Complainant stated she had her Apple iPad under the seat and left her vehicle unlocked when she went into the store. When she returned her iPad was missing.

Boulan Park, 3671 Crooks Road, Aug. 10, 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Complainant reported her vehicle was parked in the lot. When she returned her passenger side window was smashed and her purse was missing. 

Milverton and East Maple Road, Aug. 11, 1:36 to 2:36 p.m.: Complainant reported she left her purse in the backseat of her locked vehicle. When she returned she discovered her rear passenger window smashed and her purse containing her wallet stolen. 

Minors and alcohol

Interstate-75 and Rochester Road, Aug. 11, 3:07 a.m.: Troy Officers stopped a vehicle after observing the vehicle crossing lane lines. Officers approached the vehicle and detected a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the interior of the vehicle. The driver admitted to drinking and failed field sobrieties. The driver, a 19-year-old from Lake Orion was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .24 percent.

Retail fraud

JcPenney, 700 West Fourteen Mile Road, Aug. 7, 6:50 p.m.: Loss prevention officers advised the suspect was observed selecting 5 pairs of pants and entering the fitting room. The suspect left the fitting room without any merchandise and left the store. Loss prevention stopped the suspect and recovered the merchandise from the suspects backpack. The total value of the recovered merchandise was $219. The suspect, a 16-year-old from Sterling Heights was arrested for retail fraud. 

Macy’s, 2750 West Big Beaver Road, Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m.: Loss prevention advised the suspect was observed selecting a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. The suspect entered the fitting room and exited without the merchandise. The suspect left the store without paying for the merchandise. Loss prevention stopped the suspect and recovered the merchandise valued at $139. The suspect, a 16-year-old from Grosse Pointe Woods was arrested for retail fraud.

Wal-Mart, 2001 West Maple, Aug. 8, 1:45 p.m.: Loss prevention advised the suspect was observed selecting women’s make-up and concealed it in a backpack. The suspect, a 31-year-old from Troy was stopped by loss prevention when he exited the store and the make-up was recovered. Total value of the theft $48.79. The suspect was arrested for retail fraud.

Nordstrom, 2850 West Big Beaver Road, Aug. 9, 12:30 p.m.: Loss prevention officers advised a suspect was observed selecting merchandise and concealing it in a shopping bag. The suspect then left the store with the merchandise, failing to pay for it. Loss prevention stopped the suspect and recovered the merchandise valued at $114.80. The suspect, a 15-year-old from Grosse Pointe Woods was arrested for retail fraud.

JcPenney, 700 West Fourteen Mile Road, Aug. 10, 5:45 p.m.: Loss prevention advised the suspect was observed selecting merchandise and entering the fitting room. The suspect then left the fitting room without merchandise. Loss prevention checked the fitting room and found price tags and no merchandise. The suspect left the store without paying for the concealed merchandise. Loss prevention stopped the suspect and recovered the merchandise valued at $147. The suspect, a 35-year-old from Sterling Heights was arrested for retail fraud.

JcPenney, 700 West Fourteen Mile Road, Aug. 11, 2:03 p.m.: Loss prevention officers advised the suspect was observed selecting jewelry and removing the price tags. The suspect then put the jewelry on. The suspect left the store without paying for the jewelry. Loss prevention stopped the suspect and recovered the jewelry valued at $44. the suspect was arrested for retail fraud.

JcPenney, 700 West Fourteen Mile Road, Aug. 11, 4:30 p.m.: Loss prevention officers advised the suspect was observed selecting three rings and placing them in a shopping bag without paying for them. The suspect then left the store and was stopped by loss prevention. The value of the merchandise was $96. The suspect, a 12-year-old from Madison Heights was detained for retail fraud and released to parents.

Au Courant, 2801 West Big Beaver Road, Aug. 11, 4:45 p.m.: Mall security advised officers three suspects entered the store and asked to see a pair of Cartier sunglasses. The suspects ran from the store with the sunglasses and were caught by officers and Mall Security. The Cartier sunglasses were valued at $2,500.  The suspects, a 17, 18 and 22-year-olds from Detroit were arrested for retail fraud.
