Troy Mayor Calls Argument with Distinguished Citizen 'Unfortunate'

Janice Daniels argued with former council member Mary Kerwin Monday evening about the origin of Kerwin's recent 2012 Distinguished Citizen award.

Two days after arguing with the city's 2012 Distinguished Citizen Mary Kerwin while handing her a proclamation during Monday evening’s Troy City Council meeting, Troy Mayor Janice Daniels spoke out about the incident in an interview with Fox 2 Detroit.

"This is another example of the way every word that comes out of my mouth is being used by my political opponents to try to destroy me, and I think it's very unfortunate," Daniels told Fox 2 Detroit on Wednesday.

“In my years of public service, I have never seen a mayor be so dismissive of a city proclamation during a formal presentation," Kerwin, a recall supporter and former city councilwoman, told Troy Patch on Tuesday. "It felt dismissive, and that’s unfortunate, especially when it comes at a time that should be spent recognizing the volunteer efforts of our community.”

Calls to Daniels from Troy Patch seeking comment on the incident were never returned.
